About IWBDA

The Tenth International Workshop on Bio-Design Automation (IWBDA) will bring together researchers from the synthetic biology, systems biology, and design automation communities to discuss concepts, methodologies and software tools for the computational analysis and synthesis of biological systems.

The field of synthetic biology, still in its early stages, has largely been driven by experimental expertise, and much of its success can be attributed to the skill of the researchers in specific domains of biology. There has been a concerted effort to assemble repositories of standardized components; however, creating and integrating synthetic components remains an ad hoc process. Inspired by these challenges, the field has seen a proliferation of efforts to create computer-aided design tools addressing synthetic biology's specific design needs, many drawing on prior expertise from the electronic design automation (EDA) community.

The IWBDA offers a forum for cross-disciplinary discussion, with the aim of seeding and fostering collaboration between the biological and the design automation research communities.

IWBDA is organized by the non-profit Bio-Design Automation Consortium (BDAC). BDAC is an officially recognized 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization.

Call for Papers

Abstracts should be two pages long and referenced, following the ACM template (SIGCHI version) at www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-templates. For latex please use

Inclusion of figures is encouraged. Indicate whether you would like your abstract considered for a poster presentation, an oral presentation, or both. Include the full names, affiliations and contact information of all authors. Abstracts should be submitted in pdf format and should not exceed two pages.

Abstracts will be reviewed by the Program Committee. Those that are selected for oral and poster presentations will distributed to workshop participants and posted on the workshop website.

Allan Kuchinsky IWBDA Scholarship

This year IWBDA will be soliciting applications for the 4th annual Allan Kuchinsky Internation Workshop on Bio-Design Automation Scholarship. Allan was a tremendous supporter of both synthetic biology as well as design automation. His contributions to projects such as Cytoscape and Eugene as well as numerous Agilent efforts was crucial in helping academic and industrial researchers develop state-of-the-art technologies and tools to lay the foundation for this field. This scholarship in some small measure attempts to recognize his tireless efforts by highlighting a student who shares Allan's vision for the field. This scholarship will provide support for one recipient to attend IWBDA (registration, airfare, hotel, and small travel stipend) along with a recognized poster presentation slot. Interested individuals should provide the following: IWBDA abstract, resume/CV, essay, and recommendation letter. For details, including how to apply, please see this PDF.

Hana El-Samad
Hana El-Samad

Prof. Hana El-Samad is a Professor at University of California, San Francisco. Her laboratory is focused on tackling fundamental challenges in the precise measurement and analysis of decision making in complex biological networks. They are an exciting mixture of biologists, engineers, physicists and mathematicians who are constantly pushing technological, experimental, and computational boundaries. For example, they use variability between genetically and environmentally identical cells, coupled with quantitative measurement of single cells and rigorous computational modeling, to unravel cellular wiring diagrams and probe their dynamical properties. They develop technologies to monitor dynamic signal propagation across whole networks in single cells with unprecedented precision and scale. They also develop efficient computational tools for the modeling and analysis of spatio-temporal cellular dynamics. They harness the power of these tools to probe coordination and signal integration in cellular stress responses, such as the Environmental Stress Response.



Héctor García Martin
Hector Garcia Martin

Dr. Héctor García Martin is a Scientific Lead at Berkeley Lab, participating in both Agile BioFoundry and JBEI projects. His research interests involve mathematical modeling of biological systems, metabolic engineering, systems biology, metabolic flux analysis, data visualization, scientific software development and microbial ecology. In his position at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI), Dr. Martin is developing predictive quantitative models of microbial metabolism to direct metabolic engineering efforts and improve biofuel yields. His efforts are divided among machine learning and flux modeling approaches, as well as software development for visualization and acquisition of data. He is also using mathematical approaches to try and develop quantitative predictive models for microbial communities.



SBOL Workshop

The Synthetic Biology Open Language (SBOL) Developers Group is holding their Third Annual Introductory Workshop on Aug. 1st at IWBDA. Software developers are invited to come learn how they can incorporate SBOL into your software tools. At this workshop, we will be demoing the SBOL libraries and leading a hands-on tutorial for SBOL developers.

BDAthlon

The BDAthlon is a programming contest in which teams work to solve two programming challenges. Judges will examine the solutions to these challenges and award certificates and a total cash prize of $500 to the winning team at the close of IWBDA. BDAthlon challenges can touch upon any of the following five bio-design automation areas:

Each team is allowed to have 2-3 members. Preference is given to graduate students, but postdoctoral and undergraduate student members are permitted. Up to four teams will be selected by a subset of the Technical Program Committee to each receive a travel stipend of up to $1000. Stipends will be used to reimburse the recorded travel/registration costs of the selected teams at the conclusion of IWBDA.

The BDAthlon was previous held in 2016 and 2017.

The contest itself will start at 8 am on July 31 and end at 8 am on Aug 1, 2018.

Anti-harassment Policy

The International Workshop on Bio-Design Automation will not tolerate harassment of workshop participants. Examples of such prohibited practices would include gossiping, slurs, offensive or derogatory comments, or other verbal or physical conduct. This includes sexual harassment as defined as "unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature" not only when the conduct is made as a condition of workshop participation ("quid pro quo" harassment), but when the conduct creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive workshop environment. IWBDA participants who feel they are being harassed by participants, organizers, or support staff should make it clear to the individual(s) that such behavior is offensive and unwelcome. Any participant who believes he or she has been subjected to harassing conduct can report the matter to the IWBDA organizing committee or the Bio-Design Automation Consortium (BDAC) executive committee.
